The Chariots
Each deity is carried in a massive, newly built wooden chariot:
Nandighosa (Jagannath): 16 wheels, \~44 feet high
Taladhwaja (Balabhadra): 14 wheels, \~43 feet high
Darpadalana(Subhadra): 12 wheels, \~42 feet high
These chariots are pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri, symbolizing a spiritual journey and unity of all classes and communities.
Spiritual and Cultural Significance
Rath Yatra celebrates the divine journey of the three deities to their aunt’s home, the Gundicha Temple, a tradition deeply rooted in Vaishnavism. The rare public viewing of Lord Jagannath (usually hidden inside the temple) offers devotees a chance for darshan and is believed to grant immense spiritual merit.
Pulling the chariots is considered a sacred act, symbolizing surrender to divine will and gaining liberation (moksha).
